Indian Cities and the Poor
The cities are skewed against the
poor. Rather than cities that are smart we should aim for cities that are more
equitable and inclusive. The Poor, in all aspects, live excluded and outcast.
The angst of the poor people in city are guilt inducing to the thoughtful.
Plagued by a meager income that is hardly enough for feeding the families and
left to suffer in longing for eternity watching
the flaunting rich. What are we galloping for? If we can't offer
hygienic living spaces, a reasonable income and quality education,
entertainment and healthcare. Are we going to leave them suffer pining forever.
They are also the sections we
exercise caution against. We fear they may rob. We fear they may rape. We fear
they may abuse. The aversion we have for them is nothing less than the
repulsion for the slimy creatures. Our
need for them is limited to driving autos; cleaning toilets; sweeping streets; maintain
our drains. Unconsciously we need them to be poor forever. We drove them from
villages? They migrated to the cities and towns not in search of riches but for
livelihood; for survival. They moved because they could continue their
existence. What does the city offer them? What does the nation offer them? They
don't ask questions. That is very convenient for us. Let us be comfortable.
Enjoy the luxury. Have a great time on this Earth. May be on some other Earth a
century later. But, this question is relevant wherever we go . If we have
conscience we should think about it. Not an order but, an observation.
